Tax returns & planning

Self Assessment done properly and tax planned before the deadline, not after it.

A return that is right. A plan that is useful.

A tax return is a snapshot, but the decisions behind it happen all year. The relief you claim, the timing of a sale, the way a business pays its owner and the records you keep in March all change what the return says in January.

We prepare personal tax returns carefully and explain what is behind the number. Where there is room to do something differently, we tell you before the deadline rather than after the opportunity has gone.

Who it helps

  • Employees and directors with a return to file, shares, benefits or a second income.
  • Self-employed people and sole traders who want the figures and the tax to agree.
  • Landlords with rental income, expenses and a property that may have changed value.
  • Investors and savers dealing with dividends, interest or capital gains.
  • Anyone who has had a letter from HMRC and would like somebody to read it first.

What is included

  • Self Assessment tax returns prepared from your records, checked and filed on time.
  • Personal tax planning around income timing, allowances, pension contributions and capital gains.
  • Property and investment tax including rental accounts and capital gains calculations.
  • HMRC correspondence opened, understood and answered on your behalf.
  • A clear tax bill forecast so the payment on account is not a surprise.
  • A planning conversation about anything coming up: a sale, a retirement, a change in the family or a year that looks different from the last one.

How it works

  1. We gather the pieces. Income, expenses, investment statements, P60s, property records - we tell you exactly what we need and when.
  2. We prepare and check. The return is put together, the figures are tested against last year and anything unusual is discussed with you rather than guessed at.
  3. You approve it. We explain the result, the tax due and the dates it has to be paid.
  4. We file and keep watching. The return is submitted, a copy is kept and the next year begins with a clean record rather than a scramble.

A question we hear often

  • I have just received a letter from HMRC. Should I panic? Usually not. Most letters are routine, but they do have deadlines, so it is worth sending it to us early rather than filing it under "later".
  • I have never done a tax return. Can you help? Yes. We will work out what HMRC already knows, what needs reporting and what you can leave out.
  • Can you still help if the deadline has passed? Yes. A late return is not the end of the world; it needs sorting, and we will deal with the penalty question honestly.
