Angela Munn PhD, CTA, MAAT

Director of Hudson Conway. A chartered tax adviser and member of the Association of Accounting Technicians, with a doctorate and a talent for making complicated things feel simple.

A different kind of accountant

Angela leads Hudson Conway, which means she is the person who reads the awkward email, sits with a client at the kitchen table when a business is changing shape, and explains the same tax rule twice without making anybody feel small.

Her route into accountancy was not the traditional one. A doctorate, a chartered tax qualification and full membership of the Association of Accounting Technicians is an unusual combination for a small firm - and a useful one. It means the technical questions can be answered in depth, while the everyday ones still get a clear, patient explanation.

What the letters mean

PhD - Doctor of Philosophy

A PhD is a doctoral research degree. It is awarded after a programme of original research, usually over several years, examined through a thesis and an oral defence. It is not an accounting or tax qualification; it is evidence of a particular way of thinking.

For a client, that shows up in the way Angela works: reading the detail, testing an assumption before relying on it, and being comfortable with a question that does not have a two-line answer. It also means she is very hard to bore with the complicated bits.

CTA - Chartered Tax Adviser

CTA stands for Chartered Tax Adviser and is awarded by the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT), the UK's professional body for tax. It is one of the most respected tax qualifications in the country.

Becoming a CTA normally means passing the CIOT's examinations and completing a period of relevant practical experience. The qualification covers the whole tax system - income tax, corporation tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax, VAT and the interaction between them - rather than one small corner of it.

In practice, CTA after a name means the tax advice you receive has been built on a deep, examined understanding of the rules, not a quick search on the internet.

MAAT - Member of the Association of Accounting Technicians

MAAT stands for Member of the Association of Accounting Technicians. The AAT is a professional body for people working in accountancy and finance, and full membership follows its accounting qualification and its experience requirement.

It is the qualification that keeps the advice grounded in the real work: accounts that balance, records that can be relied on, VAT that has been treated properly and a business finance picture that makes sense. Members work to the AAT's professional and ethical standards, including continuing professional development.

What the combination means for you

  • The everyday work is done properly. Bookkeeping, accounts, VAT and payroll are not the boring bits between the interesting questions. They are the foundation everything else stands on.
  • The complicated tax questions get a proper answer. Chartered tax status is the depth behind the planning, the inheritance tax question or the year when several rules seem to apply at once.
  • You get the explanation as well as the answer. A doctorate teaches you to make an argument clear. Angela uses that every time she explains why a figure is what it is.

How Angela works

  1. Listen before advising. The first conversation is about what is actually going on, not about which form needs filing.
  2. Explain the trade-offs. There is rarely one right answer in tax or business. You get the options, the consequences and a recommendation you can understand.
  3. Keep it human. Deadlines are real and rules matter, but nobody should be made to feel silly for asking a question about their own money.

A note from Angela

I became an accountant because I like making things make sense. A set of figures can look like a wall of noise until somebody shows you the story inside it. That moment - when a client says "oh, I see" - is the reason I do this.

You do not need to arrive with perfect records or a finished plan. Bring the question you have, and we will start there.
